It can be unilateral or bilateral, depending on whether it affects one <a href=\"http:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/fr\/doc\/t\/medecine-1\/d\/loeil-la-vision-au-dela-de-la-vision_667\/c3\/221\/p6\/\" target=\"_self\">eye<\/a> or both, and is caused by a deficiency of the \"levator\" muscle of the upper eyelid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" src=\"https:\/\/ophtalmo-bw.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Ptosis-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17109\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Several factors can be the cause of ptosis:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">In the case of aging, the eyelid muscle thins and may sag with age.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\" class=\"translation-block\">A neuromuscular disorder, ptosis can then be the first sign of a muscle disease; trauma, such as a blow to the eyebrow arch; or a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.futura-sciences.com\/fr\/definition\/t\/medecine-2\/d\/predisposition_2817\/\" target=\"_self\">congenital predisposition<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">The main treatment is based on a simple surgical procedure. It involves \"re-attaching\" the upper eyelid to the muscle.
