Blepharitis: causes, symptoms, and treatment of irritated eyelids and dry eyes

What is blepharitis?
Blepharitis is a chronic inflammation of the eyelids, often along the lash line. It causes redness, itching, irritation, and especially dry eyes, which can significantly reduce eye comfort.

Common causes

  • Bacterial overgrowth on the edge of the eyelids
  • Meibomian gland dysfunction (responsible for the lipid layer of tears)
  • Skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis or rosacea

Main symptoms

  • Red and irritated eyelids
  • A burning and itching sensation
  • Dry or watery eyes (both are common)
  • Crusts or dandruff at the base of the eyelashes
  • Light sensitivity

Treatment and advice

  • Eyelid hygiene: daily cleansing with warm compresses to loosen sebum and remove crusts
  • Ocular lubricants / artificial tears: essential for relieving dryness and protecting the cornea
  • Topical antibiotics: only if the bacterial inflammation is severe
  • Management of associated conditions: dermatitis, rosacea, or Meibomian gland dysfunction

Regular follow-up with an ophthalmologist is crucial to prevent complications, including infections or worsening of dry eye.
